Protecting the Unprotected Consumer Data in Internet of Things: Current Scenario of Data Governance in Malaysia

With the increasing number of smart devices and connections in Internet Things (IoT) comes risks—specifically involving consumer data protection. In this respect, exploratory research examines current issues IoT personal protection Malaysia that includes: regulatory frameworks governance; gaps; key challenges implementation. Results from mixed-methods indicates a majority consumers expressed concern about risks due to increased usage devices. Moreover, there is crucial need increase regulation accountability industry. regard, collaboration partnerships between main stakeholders are essential tackling emerging order strengthen governance, fundamentals should be: strengthening education partnership government-industry-civil society; providing motivation for active participation NGOs civil obtaining industry buy-in. This paper also proposes structure governance evolving data-related technology, particularly case breaches or cyber incidents.
